The Vacation Bible School curriculum this year from Answers in Genesis is entitled The Great Jungle Journey. What an exciting theme of going on a river cruise through the Amazon jungle! It has been a tremendous week for the kids with so much volunteer help. And I trust that God was glorified through the effort of discipling kids via VBS.
While the theme, decorations, drama, crafts, science, games, and snacks are important parts of VBS, at Faith Baptist, we value the content for its biblical basis. This year, the teaching covers the meta-narrative of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, via the seven C’s of history. It has an apologetics focus. The 7 C’s are Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross, and Consummation.
Day 1 covered Creation. It took us back to Genesis 1 and when ALL of creation was good. The teaching time included an examination of whether Creation was man’s idea (Big Bang) or based on God’s Word.
Day 2 covered Corruption and Catastrophe. It explored how Adam sinned in Genesis 3 (Corruption) which affected his descendants. And they were so wicked that God sent a global flood (Catastrophe) in Genesis 6-9 as a judgment for their sin. The teaching time examined the reality of a global flood. This day’s theme ensures that kids understand our sin nature and how ALL have sinned.
Day 3 covered Confusion. The Confusion at the Tower of Babel (pronounced like Bay-ble) in Genesis 11 was the historical event focus. They were ALL in confusion. The origin of people groups was explored. The diverse languages and skin tones we see today were taught through multiple avenues.
Day 4 covered Christ and the Cross. With the background understanding that man is sinful, we rejoice in having a Savior who is sinless. God provided His very own Son (Christ) to die on the Cross for the redemption of our souls. He is the Savior for ALL who believe. The gospel was clearly communicated at every stop the kids made. Invitations for salvation were presented on this day as well.
Day 5 covered Consummation. This is the climax of the week. It shows the thrilling conclusion to the history of the world when ALL goes back to being good again as evidenced in Revelation. The teaching time examined how it all turns out in the complete end (Consummation) as informed by the Bible. This is ultimately the best news; God wins against sin and Satan.
By the end of the week, the children have had a summarized, but also a thoroughly informed biblical theology. Each day’s theme is delivered in multiple platforms to encourage repetition to help kids remember the content. While this year’s curriculum has a more apologetics focus, we are already looking forward to next year’s theme which takes a closer look at Jesus’ life.
